And
Monday 24th (evening), Tuesday 25th, Wednesday 26th and Thursday 27th September 2012

Join Patrick Harding, author of 'How to Identify Edible Mushrooms' and the Collins Gem 'Mushrooms and Toadstools', for a long weekend in Crieff and the surrounding Strathearn area, including Comrie and Monzie. During the mushroom forays you will learn the characteristics of the fruitbody, the shape, smell and texture of the mushrooms which help you determine which ones are edible, and which ones are most definitely not!

Patrick is a mine of information relating to plants and their diverse uses. The myths and legends of mycology are also brought into this mushroom hunting holiday. Ever the enthusiast, Patrick is most encouraging to first time collectors and experienced fungi forager.

The course starts over dinner, where you will meet the other 'forayers', and is followed by a talk by Patrick on the key features of a mushroom which help identification. Over the next 2 ½ days, field trips will take you to the local fields and woods to search for mushrooms. The areas around the Hosh area where the Famous Grouse Experience is also located, the Knock of Crieff, and near to Auchingarrich Wildlife Park and Torleum Hill by Comrie are all areas with mixed woodland - with lots of oak, beech and scots pine. Where possible, we will share transport, to minimise our impact on the local environment. During these excursions, and back at Galvelmore House, Patrick will help you learn what details to look for in a mushroom to help identify it - and in what kind of habitat it grows - along with some suggestions for their preservation for future use and culinary uses - with a fry up being one way! The course concludes over lunch on the last day with a summing up of all that we have found and where to go next as a seasoned hunter.

Testimonial:
I just wanted to thank you and David for the wonderfully excellent mushroom course and accommodation. Patrick is such an excellent teacher and brings a group of total strangers effortlessly together with his very informal, totally informative teaching style and his stories are brilliantly entertaining.

Aside from that, Galvelmore is a beautifully comfortable and relaxing place to stay and you and David are such warm and generous hosts that the whole stay and course was a delight. The food was simply delicious and far surpasses any other place I’ve stayed/eaten (including most Edinburgh restaurants) so I have been busily recommending you to everyone I know (a) to stay with you guys if they’re in Crieff and (b) to do the course.
