Drawing and Painting Flowers with Jean Binney and accommodation Crieff, Perthshire

Friday 21st – Monday 24th May 2010

Here is a chance to enhance the pleasure of garden flowers through painting, on a residential course at Galvelmore House (and garden). Jean will guide you through drawing and painting techniques helping you create art work based on flowers from Katy and David’s large garden. Teaching sessions will take place either in the garden with its extensive flower beds (weather permitting), or in a designated teaching room in the house. Equally weather dependent, lunch will be al fresco or in the house.

Jean is used to teaching both beginners and those more experienced in drawing and painting flowers. An enthusiasm for flowers and an enjoyment of art are the only two prerequisites for the course. Numbers will be limited to ensure plenty of personal, friendly tuition with positive feedback throughout. Topics will include drawing techniques, design and layout, colour matching and the use of watercolour paints and coloured pencils. Jean is also happy to offer advice on mounting and framing your work.

A materials list will be provided and Jean will bring a range of watercolour papers for you to try (and purchase at reasonable prices) together with a range of different art materials. If you have experience in other media (eg pen and ink, acrylic paints) which you would wish to use, please feel free to bring these materials along.

Jean will have a wide range of relevant books on art techniques, contemporary botanical art and books about plants for participants to use during the course.

Evening options will include continuing with your art work, a trouble-shooting session and a slide talk on the history of botanical illustration. Participants are also welcome to attend the evening slide shows (herbal medicine and trees) which are part of Patrick’s concurrent course, members of which you will meet over dinner.

Jean (Patrick Harding’s wife) has taught botanical illustration to adults for over 15 years including classes for Sheffield University and the Workers’ Education Association.
